For my husband’s and my 28th wedding anniversary, we visited the small town of Parrsboro in Nova Scotia. I had hoped to find sea glass at some of the local beaches, but no such luck. Of course, we did get a later start to the day, so we couldn’t search all the places. But that was OK, because we discovered that it is a very quirky and colourful town! LOOK AT THESE BUILDINGS!
This one above housed several small stores (most of which were closed because it was late in the day). I love, love, love the colourfulness of it!
The next two are a building that houses an art studio for several artists, including whoever happens to be the current artist in residence. I tell you, I looked into applying for this program! But it’s not feasible at the moment. But look at how the building is painted!
I love the purple paint trimming the door and roof! And that lime green door!
We parked next to this studio around 5 p.m.. The store clerk was still in there, with the door wide open. We asked if it was still open (see sign in photo), and she let us come in and wander around for a few minutes while she tidied up and closed down for the day. This is typical for rural Nova Scotia; people are so friendly and laid back. When I first moved here twenty-six years ago, it took me awhile to get used to (even though I grew up in rural Maine) after a few years of living near big cities (Boston, New York, Toronto, Ottawa…). But I did.
We enjoyed ourselves, just meandering along the main street, looking at the low tide in the bay (Bay of Fundy, home of the world’s highest tides). It was a warm and sunny evening, just perfect. As we walked by one house, I suddenly spotted this little gem in a floral side garden and had to get a photo of it. Isn’t that dollhouse-in-a-garden adorable?!
We poked into a few restaurants to see what we wanted to eat; all were full except the little pizza shop near the end of the small businesses section of the main street. But, just as we passed a tiny, narrow, and dark nook right beside the pizza shop, this little scene stopped me in my tracks, too.
How FUN is that?! An old piano all decorated with paint, sitting in front of a yellow garage door with driveway surrounded by building walls and roofed over. I almost didn’t see the piano while walking by. I squealed with delight to my husband, took photos, and texted them to a few people I knew would appreciate it, such as my artistic and piano-loving daughter. Then we went into the (very, very, VERY hot) pizza shop, placed our order, and sat on a bench outside to wait, at the end of Piano Driveway.
I love hearing about towns and homeowners and neighbourhoods that spruce up their living area with sights such as this. Have you ever seen quirky places like this? Please tell me about them in the comments, including telling me where they are!
There are a few places like this in my home town where I grew up. I am always amaze when things stand out are unique and look different. Thanks for sharing these are wonderful!
OK, PLEASE tell me where they are! Links? Photos? I would love to visit and take photos sometime. I made a new friend after my daughter’s accident (due to it), and her home is a riot of colour and pattern. She’s agreed to let me take photos and write a blog post about her sometime.
It’s been a while since I been to my home town I am not sure if I will be back till next summer. If it’s still there I will take pictures for you. I am even amuse by these little book exchanges that keep popping up all over the city. You can take a book and leave a book some people have even got creative in what they look like. Are you aware of these hidden gems?
Yes, I am!! They are so fun.
